CANVAS
Youth was ours…
The canvas of our life
Awaiting to unfold
We dipped our brushes
Into pools of dreams
Each stroke bold,
Without inhibition
A thrill that teetered
Often on a precipice
Ready to plunge us
To our fall…
They bristled and swayed
Dancing in colors
Daring and challenging
A masterpiece in the making
Splashes of our love
Vibrant…
And one day
You walked away…
The crimson curdled in pain
Hues of orange and yellow
Smudged and faded away
Greens, mauves, blues,
Smeared into a muddy brown
Of abandonment
Our palette dried,
Cracked and turned cold
As realization seeped into every
Line and crevice
Your dreams were never mine…
I moved on to other kaleidoscopes
Attempting at brightness
A tinge here
A blob there
Black darkness
Often threatening
Grey overcast
Overwhelming…
My masterwork remained illusive
And flitted like the butterfly
Never within my grasp
Decades rolled…
My life cluttered
With incomplete stories
Of various shades…
When a day came
You walked into my frame
Picking your brush
That lay dead and inert
Wasted and aged,
Bringing it back to life…
Each line steady
And poised…
Thoughtful and sensitive
Gently stroking the dead contours…
Coaxing and caressing
The shy and hesitant colors
As they emerge once again
Luscious and alive…
We strive once more
Another endeavor
Another attempt…
Distant and yet one
Meeting and parting
Dreams of yesteryears
A distant throb…
You now have your own shades
And hues
As I have mine
And yet we meet
Time and again
To paint our work of art
With its painful twists and
Meanderings ….
A different masterpiece
Traces of the old
And yet new…
A beginning of an end
Oh so beautiful...<3
ReplyDeleteEvery new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.Nothing is predestined. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings.Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find ''tomorrow'' on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday's defeats and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, ''If I had my life to live over again. ''Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day! Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.
ReplyDeleteA great way to start the new year Rimly...I wish for the happiness, love and luck to come your way.

ReplyDeleteThank you Savira.
ReplyDeleteRimly, your beautiful words told a beautiful story... Ahhh love. :-)
ReplyDeleteRimly, I don't know how you do it but you managed to crawl inside of me with your words and touch the deepest parts. I thought I was only reading a poem but I was mistaken, I was meeting a spirit, and that spirit spoke to me. You're amazing Rimly.
ReplyDeleteYes love Irene!! Thank you so much for your comment.
ReplyDeleteLeah I guess we are kindred spirits. It really encourages me to write more when I get comments like yours. Thank you my friend for appreciating my poem.
ReplyDeleteWhat's so great about this canvas is it never comes to an end. There's always something new that adds into it ~ a splash, a blob, a glitter. Everything you do with it is simply magical and lovely~ alive and speaks to everybody.
ReplyDeleteI love your work of art soul sis :*
Life is like that isn't it soul sis? As long as we have it, it is ongoing, we fill it with our colors. Thank you so much for this beautiful comment
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly how a painter make love with his artwork...or sometimes beyond the canvas. Very Intense!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know how to pack a punch, woman. I locked on the last line, 'The beginning of the end...' there is something so beautiful in endings, of course, it doesn't feel like that at the time. The start of a new year is the same, is it not? You've given me something to ponder today, Rimly. Probably not what your poem intended but words have a mind of their own. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteYour poetry is rich with color, Rimly. Here, you painted a lifetime. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteFherYmas I had a feeling you would understand this poem being an artist. Thank you so much for your comment.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean Brenda. Endings always feel terrible but on hindsight we always know that it was for the best. Have a great 2012.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sweepyjean. We are all artists I guess painting a masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome...:-)
ReplyDeleteHello Rimly. Happy New Year
ReplyDeleteI have to second everything Alpana said.
What's done is done, we can't go back & change the what ifs. We can only learn & keep our footsteps moving forward. When love is in your midst, embrace it with your whole heart because it's worth it.
This is beauty in the making right here.
Wonderful post & artwork.
Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the visits too.
Dear Rimly:
ReplyDeleteLoved the metaphor here. You have given a rich and wholesomeness to beginnings from endings. The circle goes on and it cannot be more evident from this piece.
Loved seeing the word "meanderings" in the fifth line from bottom.
Joy always,
Susan
Thank you Janu. Glad you liked it
ReplyDeleteThank you Andy. Every ending is a beginning and my poem tries to portray that. Thank you for your lovely comment
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan. Life is a meandering river, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI can speak of what I have seen, what I have heard and what I have felt...How should I comment on something that beautiful which I havent seen ever, havent heard of, havent felt ever...If I say its awesome, have touched deep into my heart, then is this the justice I have done?
ReplyDeleteAnd this shall be my comment. :)
Anshul, you have done total justice by your comment. Thank you my friend. Really loved your comment
ReplyDeleteI loved the imagery in this poem. So many of the lines stood out..I particularly loved: " We dipped our brushes into pools of dreams." Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful poem..You're such a gifted storyteller as your words express what everyone has experienced at one time or another. We all paint with different colors in love and when intermixed with another it produces shades that are remarkable and special. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!! Blessings :)
ReplyDeleteRimly, I have no words to describe how I feel right now after reading your words. This touches so deeply...to have someone as close to you as almost one...then to go away to only later come back into your masterpiece. This blew me away!
ReplyDeleteThis was an absolute wonderful piece of poetry rather I should say u painted the emotions from beginning to end so well...this was indepth!!
ReplyDeleteLovely!
Mani
Dreamlike writing and art.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jessica. I dont know why I thought of writing a poem of love with painting as an imagery. I really liked your comment
ReplyDeleteThank you David, really honored by this comment of yours.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your lovely Anna. Love, when you are young has brighter hues. But when you are older the same love has darker shades because of all the things in life that we go through.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mani. I really enjoyed composing this poem. Life is a canvas to be filled by us with our experiences, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThank you Debra for your comment
ReplyDeleteWow. I can really FEEL the two stories interweave. You're a true artist. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Rachel for your comment
ReplyDeleteWoW -- I don't even know what to think about this. Seems like a tragic love story. Does it have a happy ending? I can't tell ...
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing yourself this way ;-x
PS Love the image, too!
Thank you Linda. There is no ending but a new beginning, something different from what it started out to be.
ReplyDeleterimly,
ReplyDeleteI love love it.... A style that is all your own : )

Jessica
Thank you Jessica. <3
ReplyDeleteA beginning of an end!! Beautiful lines....you're just amazing Rimly....loved it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Swati. I missed your visits. Great to have you back!
ReplyDeleteyour canvas is so wonderfully painted. it is too deep and sensitive.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sancheeta. Life is a canvas and it depends on us how colorful we make it!
ReplyDeleteRimly, this left me breathless! The color/canvas word play was gorgeous. The emotions elicited from the usage of the time and space element, amazing. I love when people can reconnect and love like they were supposed to. Sometimes we need to live and learn from others before we can truly love our beloved. Awesome!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking the time to read and comment. Reading your poem on life being a canvas I thought about this poem that I had written. I truly beleive life is a canvas.
