CANVAS

CANVAS

Youth was ours…
The canvas of our life
Awaiting to unfold
We dipped our brushes
Into pools of dreams
Each stroke bold,
Without inhibition
A thrill that teetered
Often on a precipice
Ready to plunge us
To our fall…
They bristled and swayed
Dancing in colors
Daring and challenging
A masterpiece in the making
Splashes of our love
Vibrant…
And one day
You walked away…
The crimson curdled in pain
Hues of orange and yellow
Smudged and faded away
Greens, mauves, blues,
Smeared into a muddy brown
Of abandonment
Our palette dried,
Cracked and turned cold
As realization seeped into every
Line and crevice
Your dreams were never mine…
I moved on to other kaleidoscopes
Attempting at brightness
A tinge here
A blob there
Black darkness
Often threatening
Grey overcast
Overwhelming…
My masterwork remained illusive
And flitted like the butterfly
Never within my grasp
Decades rolled…
My life cluttered
With incomplete stories
Of various shades…
When a day came
You walked into my frame
Picking your brush
That lay dead and inert
Wasted and aged,
Bringing it back to life…
Each line steady
And poised…
Thoughtful and sensitive
Gently stroking the dead contours…
Coaxing and caressing
The shy and hesitant colors
As they emerge once again
Luscious and alive…
We strive once more
Another endeavor
Another attempt…
Distant and yet one
Meeting and parting
Dreams of yesteryears
A distant throb…
You now have your own shades
And hues
As I have mine
And yet we meet
Time and again
To paint our work of art
With its painful twists and
Meanderings ….
A different masterpiece
Traces of the old
And yet new…
A beginning of an end

  1. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.Nothing is predestined. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings.Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find ''tomorrow'' on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday's defeats and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, ''If I had my life to live over again. ''Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day! Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.
A great way to start the new year Rimly...I wish for the happiness, love and luck to come your way.

  19. Rimly, I don't know how you do it but you managed to crawl inside of me with your words and touch the deepest parts. I thought I was only reading a poem but I was mistaken, I was meeting a spirit, and that spirit spoke to me. You're amazing Rimly.

  22. What's so great about this canvas is it never comes to an end. There's always something new that adds into it ~ a splash, a blob, a glitter. Everything you do with it is simply magical and lovely~ alive and speaks to everybody.

  24. This is exactly how a painter make love with his artwork...or sometimes beyond the canvas. Very Intense!!!

  25. You know how to pack a punch, woman. I locked on the last line, 'The beginning of the end...' there is something so beautiful in endings, of course, it doesn't feel like that at the time. The start of a new year is the same, is it not? You've given me something to ponder today, Rimly. Probably not what your poem intended but words have a mind of their own. Happy New Year.

  30. Hello Rimly. Happy New Year
I have to second everything Alpana said.
What's done is done, we can't go back & change the what ifs. We can only learn & keep our footsteps moving forward. When love is in your midst, embrace it with your whole heart because it's worth it.
This is beauty in the making right here.
    Wonderful post & artwork.
Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the visits too.

  31. Dear Rimly:

Loved the metaphor here. You have given a rich and wholesomeness to beginnings from endings. The circle goes on and it cannot be more evident from this piece.

Loved seeing the word "meanderings" in the fifth line from bottom.

    Joy always,
    Susan

  35. I can speak of what I have seen, what I have heard and what I have felt...How should I comment on something that beautiful which I havent seen ever, havent heard of, havent felt ever...If I say its awesome, have touched deep into my heart, then is this the justice I have done?
And this shall be my comment. :)

  38. Such a beautiful poem..You're such a gifted storyteller as your words express what everyone has experienced at one time or another. We all paint with different colors in love and when intermixed with another it produces shades that are remarkable and special. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!! Blessings :)

  39. Rimly, I have no words to describe how I feel right now after reading your words. This touches so deeply...to have someone as close to you as almost one...then to go away to only later come back into your masterpiece. This blew me away!

  55. Rimly, this left me breathless! The color/canvas word play was gorgeous. The emotions elicited from the usage of the time and space element, amazing. I love when people can reconnect and love like they were supposed to. Sometimes we need to live and learn from others before we can truly love our beloved. Awesome!
