Journey .....Poe-a-tree-Hop

Poe-a-tree Hop

When I saw Roy’s post yesterday http://royd-spiltmilk.blogspot.com/2011/10/poe-tree-hop.html asking us bloggers to write something about “Home is where…. ”, my first thoughts were, I couldn’t do this. I write poetry mostly and I couldn’t think of any rhyming lines about a home. Today I read and commented on some of the beautiful things my blogger friends have written about it and it got me thinking. Can I too pen my thoughts on these lines? I pondered on it, about what a home means to me and these are my thoughts.

For everyone who reads these lines, “Home is where…”,  the first thoughts are “the heart is”, it is about the place they lived with their parents and shared their childhood memories or their present ones surrounded by love, laughter, happiness and people they love. Yes, we all have such homes. But I’d like to believe that a home goes beyond concrete structures. It needn’t necessarily be a house that you make a home of. I believe it can be anything, a place, a house, a situation, a job. “Home” is a state of the mind, where you feel you connect in your heart, where you finally feel safe and happy.

I have beautiful memories of my childhood, growing up in my home. They were brief because I left for boarding school at the age of 10 and since then I have never really stayed home with my parents. Then my married life took me places. I have lived like a gypsy since then until now, finally I have come to roost at my mother’s nest and it is my home. I feel loved and cherished and yes there are happy memories here too. In the course of my shifts from place to place people would often ask me “Don’t you miss the place you left behind” and I would reply, “Not really because this is where my home is now”. It is where my heart is, I have built a home out of four walls.

Home is also a relationship that you cherish, where you finally feel you have come to the end of your search and met the man you love. So often, lovers tell each other “I am finally home”. What does that mean? It means they feel connected to each other through their hearts; there is comfort, a sense of being loved and nurtured in that state of loving one another. They are home with one another. Home can also be a dream job that you land up with. You feel you have at last found the job that your heart always wanted, and you can be the person you are, because you will do what you most wanted to do.

Home can be a place that you happen to be where you feel safe and comfortable. It may be a place you have never been to and yet your heart tells you it is home, that you feel you connect to it somehow.

So for me home is not only a house that people build and make into a home with love. It is a state where you can be yourself, where you can lower your guard, feel content, loved and cherished. Home is where your heart is in sync with someone, a place, or a situation. All it needs is your heart to tell you that it feels connected and you are home.

  9. I'm a wanderer by experience - an Army brat and someone who never puts down roots in a place...instead I've learnt that the roots are in my relationships and within myself, so you will know how much your post resonated with me. Love ya, Rimly.

  11. You expressed this most aptly and beautifully, Rimly. Indeed, home is anywhere we feel safe, loved, and comfortable with who we are.

  15. Rimly, so often in conversations I hear one speak of their house as their home and I just shake my head. A house is just a structure that can be made out of anything and taken down easily. A home is something that you build and build onto. It is survived by memories that last a lifetime. It is not geographical, but is emotional. My father once told me that wherever I land, that will be my home and it will be what I make it. I was only around 18 yrs old when he spoke those words to me and I truly didn't understand what it was he was saying to me. As I am older now, I fully understand his meaning.
This was a beautiful post and I really enjoyed reading it :)

  17. Same here Mary. I always associated this line to a house that can become a home if you put your heart and soul into. Home is where the "hearth" is. But as I have grown I have realized it has nothing to do with a house, it is in your heart. Thank you so much for reading and commenting

  19. Rimly:

My PhD thesis was on 'home' and I read, studies and analysed different definitions and thoughts on home. This post brough those days in front of me. I still grapple with what is home to me. I don't actually know. I was born in a plce, grew up in another place, lived and loved in one place and now in a completely different place. Where is home then?

Long ago I did a post: I asked people what is home to them. You can read the post at:
    http://meanderingsandreflections.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-would-like-to-know.html

I wrote a lot, dear Rimly.

    Joy always,
    Susan

  23. I definitley agree with you Rimly...home is a state of mind...when you ove around alot like you did and you had that ability to make your home, no matter where you were, you were creating many lifetimes of homes in your memories...that statement we use so often..I feel like I have come home..all experiences create emotional reactions in the body and mind..when you walk through the door into your Sanctuary, called home...and you feel that peace and comfort it is then you know that you have brought that essense through and you can dwell in that at home feeling.

I love the phrase " Home is a relationship you cherish"...the many metaphors you are using are so true...Home for me is a state of being where all things in my world are working as one and I feel the connection...Loved this post Rimly and your use of metaphors in your writing...as always an inspiration and gives us another way to look at our connections in life...

  24. Hello.
Visiting from the group Blogger Reflections.

For me, my wife is my home. It's her open arms I run to when the trials & tribulations of this life become too much to bear. It's a place where I find love, comfort & I can freely express my emotions..be they of joy or tears.

    This was a thoughtful write.
    Thanks for sharing.

  31. Andy thank you for visiting Journey. To find your home in the arms of the person you love is the most amazing thing. I too feel home can also be in a relationship that you cherish. Very few are fortunate to find that kind of connection and the feeling of finally arriving home when they meet their love. You are one of the fortunate few. Thank you once again for reading and commenting. I shall go and visit your blog.

  37. I loved this, Rimly! I've often pondered this very concept, as we all identify in a different way with the word "home". My heart comes home in many ways that you mentioned - when recognizing new bonds in friendship or in loving partnership; when I read a well loved book; when I smell a fragrance or hear music from childhood; when I don a favorite item of clothing; when I hear the voice of someone I love that I haven't spoken with in a while. The list is endless, and each inhabits a different "home space" in my heart. And the best part, which I've blogged about in the past, is that this space is continually expanding to embrace new loves. I like that. Lovely post!

  38. “Home is where your heart is in sync with someone, a place, or a situation…”

Yes, exactly; it’s your heartbeat in sync with another’s, pumping to the same rhythm.

  41. Oh yes I agree. Home is where the heart is, home is where your roots are, home is a resort itself. When at home you are put into a fake state of safety. It's natural. Great post, thank you for sharing.

  45. Hi, Rimly! --

WoW -- lots to think about!

When I was traveling for business I used to say, "I'm on my way home," when referring to my hotel at the end of the day. It was not where my heart was, but it was where I was going to sleep.

Then, I would say, "I'm going home," when I was going back to my BF's house at the end of the day. But, that's not my home, because I actually have a house of my own.

Although I've been living in MN for over 30 years, I still consider New England, where I grew up, my 'home'.

I guess, I really don't know what 'home' means to me. But, I'm going to be thinking about this ... Thank you for the nudge ;-x

  49. Your post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.
    T. S. Eliot (1888 - 1965), Little Gidding

Sounds like this is something you have experienced.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes Mari it is something like that. It is finally where you connect in your heart and soul. Thank you

  51. You know soul sis, I find you very different from your poetry and narrative writing style.Although in both worlds, I can decipher your simplicity and sincerity. And I guess, I could also say that the blogs where I find inner peace and freedom to create and think is a home and a resting place. This is home for me, it has another name ~ JOURNEY :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Melissa soul sis, first of all it is great to have you back. I missed you and also your deep heartfelt comments. Yes you will find me different in both. When I write poetry it is the most spontaneous way of expressing, sometimes I write a poem in five minutes. There is a kind of urgency when I write verse. Whatever I am feeling has to be put immediately on paper and that's where my poems stem from. As for narrative style, yes what I write is felt from the heart and I believe in what I write but I am more composed when I write prose, to make sure I am not going wrong with my grammar or structure. You honor me by saying Journey is your home. You are always welcome my dear. Love you
