PROMETHEUS BOUND OR MANKIND BOUND?
In ancient Greece gods acted capriciously, frivolously and even immorally. They were not like the god of Judeo Christian where god is all- knowing, all -seeing, all- powerful, someone who is a source of moral goodness. They fought amongst themselves, were jealous of mankind as well as of each other and sided with mankind against their own. Greek gods were hostile; they toyed with mankind and had to be appeased with rites and sacrifices. Their most distinctive quality was power and not goodness which they time and again exercised on mankind. These gods were everywhere and it was not safe for mankind to neglect any of them. Mankind was a pawn in their hands.
Mankind still suffers and toils and we still accept this as our fate. But do we blame god for all the pain and suffering? Most of us don’t. I think we have evolved in many ways to realize that we suffer because of the consequences of our action not only in this lifetime but also other lifetimes. We are merely paying off our negative karmic debts in this lifetime. But how often do we say “Why me God?” Is our god indifferent to our suffering and is he merely a spectator? Or have we brought it upon ourselves for there is something called free will. God can only show us the paths we can choose and the rest is up to us which course we take in this life. But sometimes we can’t help blaming god for all the hurt and pain that befalls us. We say “Why did this have to happen to me God, I didn’t hurt anyone?” We are so overwrought with pain that we need to blame someone and it is often god, who seems to us as an indifferent supreme head who just watches and does nothing. A more evolved person will disagree, he or she will take responsibility for all that happens and accept it as fate, as something that was fated. When someone is taken away from us before we think it is time we comfort ourselves saying it was time for him or her to go, no matter how young. Life seems so unfair and yet we have to accept all that comes our way. Why are we tested time and again? Do we finally taste the fruit of our undying faith in god at the end? How many of us are like that who believes there is a reason for all that happens? And how many cuss and curse god for their fate, believing they are like pawns in the hand of god?
Thought provoking post. greek mythology is always fascinating.
ReplyDeletei do questions events and occurances and have a tendency to ask "why me?" but am at a stage where i am recognizing that i am very much a part of the equation. that for every action there is a reaction and more often than not, its start with me.
I agree with you Rimjhim. We are all part of the equation here. Thank you for commenting
ReplyDeleteHoly moly you stirred up every possible struggle with GOD I have ever had LOLOL....being a Christian..I'm supposed to believe in free will and a good and loving GOD..I have to say recently I have struggled with that belief as I look around and see all the pain and suffering in this world...so Yes I am searching for answers...and your post stirred up that search...THANK YOU...As always...XOXOXOXOXXO
ReplyDeleteLOL! Glad to stir that search for answers Bonnie. We all struggle with that belief sometime or the other. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting Rimly. I like reading Greek and Roman mythology. Of course, always with the love twists ;)...
ReplyDeleteThe way you've woven classic and modern stories into one is great. It evolved to something more profound... It is also very informative :)
I think it is basic for man to ask questions especially on those that involve tragedy or things that went wrong or unplanned...
Then in the stages of grief, we have DABDA...
But in my own reality, I guess my heart always lead me back to God after everything that happens to me.
The gods we have in mythology are human projections... God is beyond that ;)
Loved this post soul sis...
Now this post is good. Famous words...... Why me God?
ReplyDeleteI cannot or have a hard time using the word 'god' I know there is something higher.... An energy of some sorts....
Our experiences or path is of our own doing to some extent and some have been laid out for us.
Mankind has chosen to be destructive .... Not the higher energy.... Evolution on earth is bound to happen....
What I am trying to say is any action will have a reaction so be clear what action one chooses... It is the circle of life...
Hmm I think I went off the subject... Oops!
I ask all the time 'WHY ME?"...Yes Rimly,Sometimes I do believe that things happen for a reason, but at times nothing makes sense at all..whta wrong did I do to deserve this kind of a life...but I guess I will have to live with my unanswered questions all my life. Great post Rimly, only u can think of something so thought provoking
ReplyDeleteMelissa thank you for your insightful comment. You are right, in grief we do want blame because we are still trying to come to terms with it but in retrospect once we accept tragedies we do go back to god and our faith in him.
ReplyDeleteSavira you may have gone off course but it all made sense what you were trying to say. We have to face the consequences of our action. Thank you for reading and commenting
ReplyDeleteYes Alpana tragedies somehow never make any sense, all we can do is accept them and hope to keep that faith strong, the same that gives us strength to carry on and live to the fullest. That by itself is an answer I suppose. To live life to the fullest despite all the tragedies and storms that threaten to tear us apart.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post Rimly. You are addressing real issues that a lot of Christians face. We are so quick to blame God when things are going wrong but most of the time we are to blame because of the choices that we make. I love the Roman and Greek mythology. I had Latin at school and we studied the Roman mythology which I enjoyed thoroughly!
ReplyDeleteGods were creation of mankind for justifying all those things which he still not able to define and understand.
ReplyDeleteWeakest LINK
I once asked God 'Why me?'. why did i walk away from death when so many of my friends didn't. I came to realise there's a purpose for everything, no matter how little sense it makes. I just know that i have to do everything in this life that i will be proud of and make the most of every second.I am responsible for my actions and the results. I am not religious, but i do believe in god, even when at times it can be hard.
ReplyDeleteeveryone has their own way to explain. the atheist answers it in their way than the theist that poses their own. due to lack of empirical evidence atheist are skeptical to supernatural claims. on the other hand theist believe in the god's relation with the universe.
ReplyDeletePROMETHEUS BOUND AND OEDIPUS REX identifies THE MOMENT OF REVELATION whether mankind is possessed of free will that allows for individual decisions or the view that humanity is merely puppets on a god-strings.
when our dissatisfaction are at extremes and we loose the power of thinking. we look upon to the superpower controlling the universe named God. i say as an theist. we look upon to question 'why me?', we look upon to curse the term 'my fate', we look upon to the failure as the ultimate destiny. anyone of us in the mankind is hardly courageous enough to erase off the negative impulses of the unfortunate consequences and instead find how to overcome the tragedies. but that doesn't mean we lose faith upon HIM. we again revert back to HIS profound bond. mankind is bound my HIS mystic powerful presence that energizes to rise again after every fall.
your post is one of the best i ever read so far. i enjoyed reading and a bit researching. wish to read some more of this kind.
Interesting post..certainly made me think about things!! I try not to place the blame at God's feet as it's said God will only place as much burden upon our shoulders as we can handle. That said I'll been quite irate at times over Erin's death but I've never cursed any higher power; I've cursed myself, numerous vets, society, etc but God never. Whatever tragedies and bad luck in my life are the cards I'm dealt and what I deserve. Blessings :)
ReplyDeleteWhen tragedy strikes and life is painfully tough and seemingly unfair, I remember that God didn't promise to remove adversity, but He is willing and anxious to walk through it with us every step of the way. I have learned, through my own heart-wrenching experiences, to lean totally and devotedly on Him.
ReplyDeleteVery thoughtful post, Rimly!!!
Larry I too am not religious but I do have faith in something powerful and though at times it is tough I try and hold on to that faith.
ReplyDeleteSancheeta thank you so much for your very insightful comment. I agree with you
ReplyDeleteMartha every time the pain has been too intolerable god has pulled me out of it. So I cannot ever give up that faith. Thank you
ReplyDeleteDavid god only gives us that much burden that we can handle. I have gone through a lot in life but I never blame god. Thank you as always
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I read all the greek and roman myths and loved reading them! I think we know that it is not a higher power punishing us, we usually cause our own hells!!! WE ask in the name of a god out of frustration and a sense of no where else to go!!! We need to look inside ourselves for the true answers

Very thought provoking post, Rimly. I believe in a higher power than myself but don't blame him or her for whatever pain strikes my life. Having faith in that higher power keeps me going through tragic and not so tragic times.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely believe that we always have free will...freedom to choose our thoughts, and how we respond to life. I really enjoyed reading this post, Rimly, thank you for sharing your thoughts and encouraging all of us to think more deeply about ourselves. :)
ReplyDeleteJim thank you for your insights. It is very interesting to read all the comments on this post. Most have faith and take responsibility for their choices but I also know of people who have stopped believing in god because of all the tragedies that have befallen them. But the fact is we create our own hell.
ReplyDeleteMari thank you for your comment. It is only a belief in some higher power that has kept me going too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Becky.it has been very interesting reading everyone's comments on this one.
ReplyDeleteMature thinking! The world could learn lessons from this! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bernie for visiting, reading and commenting.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I hear the word greek, the greek mythology book is the first thing that pops in my mind. I love the stories and the roman mythology as well. I love this post. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Faye. I love Greek mythology
ReplyDeleteRimly, sorry it took me so long to read your lovely post but I wanted to be in a proper frame of mind to read such an interesting and deep post. I don't blame god ever because I believe in past karma and it's effect on present lives. I hurt someone in this life and I suffer in the next, as simple as that.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Rimly. Very thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteI always was fascinated by the mythic legends of Greek and Roman god and goddesses. One of my favorite gods to read about was Apollo. Though fascinating as they might be, I'm glad that they don't reflect the character of the God I've come to know and love! Thank heavens ;)
ReplyDeleteThis was a wonderful post Rimly! I get very frustrated and angered when I hear Americans ask God for this or for that after they have exhausted resources to take Him out of the schools, off the Federal buildings, etc. It seems okay to get rid of God when things seem to be going okay, but when the tides change, then everyone is asking where God is.
ReplyDeleteRimly, I really do believe its Karma, and I really do believe that whatever is happening is good for our souls. I know it's easy to say, but I dont think my God would let me suffer, just like that for no reason! And Greek literature, was my favourite topic too!! Our Professor would punctuate every thing with and "The Gods are laughing"!!
ReplyDeleteHi Sulekha can always rely on you to come and read and comment however late. Yes I too believe in karma, it makes understanding all that happens to us easier to cope with
ReplyDeleteThank you Rachel for commenting
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean Anna. We all tend to forget good in good times and remember him in dire times. We humans can be so selfish that way. Thank you for commenting
ReplyDeleteJessica thank god for that! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI love Greek mythology! My professor was gorgeous so maybe that's why I love it so much but I digress! LOL! So true are your words about how much we like to blame God. That is a foreign concept to me though. When things go wrong I blame people! Then I go to God for comfort and guidance and through that I can see at times I am the one to blame or at least I share a part in it. This post really took me back to my college days and studies. Lovely Rimly!

Yes, I have wondered why bad things have happened to me, wondered if maybe I deserved them to happen, or if a cruel God was playing a terrible joke at my expense. But maybe it was meant to be to make me a stronger person. Or not. <3
ReplyDeleteTameka I am glad this post took you back to your college days because it did take me too. Our teacher was an Irish nun but she was so good in teaching that all the tragedies she taught have left a deep impression on me. I agree with you that we are responsible to a large extent for all that happens to us. Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteSweepy I agree with you god. I think we only get so much that we can take and in the process it makes us stronger people. Thank you for commenting.
ReplyDeletefate vs. free will is a favorite puzzle of mine also. i don't blame God for things. even if i don't like something, at a core level i believe everything turns out for the best and, as you say, karma is fulfilled.
ReplyDeleteYes Linda fate vs free will is something so many of us puzzle about. But finally like you said everything turns out for the best. Thank you
ReplyDeleteSwati I agree with you. Who taught you Greek literature in LC? Thank you for commenting
